Our Roots

Welcome Credit Union was originally established in 1974 to serve employees of Burroughs Wellcome Co., a multinational pharmaceutical company named after founders Silas Burroughs and Henry Wellcome that would eventually merge into what is known today as GlaxoSmithKline. Well-positioned to serve the pharmaceutical workforce, by the 1990s, the credit union became a multi-sponsored credit union serving others with ties to North Carolina’s biopharma ecosystem.

By the early 2000s, Welcome identified its mission as “a partner with our members and neighbors, built to serve you financially wherever life takes you.” We recognized that, with 30 years of being deeply connected to the North Carolina communities of Morrisville, Zebulon, Henderson, and Greenville, these communities needed a stable, secure, and growing financial institution. Over time, the credit union would acquire three smaller credit unions and build relationships with more than 100 select employer groups in the region, including a glass company now owned by Ardagh Group, a leader in sustainable packaging solutions.

Welcome has held several names over its history. In 2008, we changed from a state to a federal charter, effectively becoming known as Welcome Federal Credit Union. Between 2016-2018, the credit union set the foundation for helping the underserved and low- to moderate-income areas in Wake and Pitt counties.

Today, Welcome has more than $93 million in assets with members across the United States and Puerto Rico. We have five branches in North Carolina.
