International travel is a much-anticipated vacation highlight for many people, with USA Today reporting that 30% of Americans will be traveling internationally in 2024.1   To ensure safe and smooth travel, there are several tips to help keep you and your finances safe while on your adventures.

Planning

Before planning or leaving for your vacation, check the US Department of State Travel site for resources on internal travel, including advisories, required documents, embassy contact information, and local customs.  Consider enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to stay informed about international health and safety and to enable embassy contact in an emergency.

Personal Preparation

  1. Inform your family of your travel plans.
  2. Make copies of important documents and note banking information as a backup in case of theft.
  3. Stop mail and inform a neighbor or friend that you’ll be away.
  4. Update all devices.
    • Pack appropriate chargers and converters.
    • Sign up for an international calling plan; many apply a daily fee only if used.
    • Install WhatsApp for Wi-Fi communication.
  5. Pack clothing with zippered compartments or inside pockets.
  6. Consider an anti-theft bag or wallet with RFID-blocking material.
  7. Bring a mini first aid kit.
  8. If not covered by your credit card, consider travel insurance for medical emergencies, trip cancellations, or lost baggage.

Financial Preparation

  1. Notify your bank, credit union, and credit card companies of your travel plans to prevent potential account freezes due to suspected fraud.
  2. Schedule bill payments before you leave.
  3. Set up account alerts and push notifications. This can be done on a mobile app, in person, or by phone.
  4. Know the currency exchange rate to avoid overspending.
  5. Consider credit cards with no foreign transaction fees or those offering travel perks like lounge access, lost luggage compensation, or travel insurance.

Tips When Traveling

  1. Avoid using public Wi-Fi, especially for sensitive activities like typing passwords.
  2. Safeguard your mobile phone, as it holds personal information.
  3. Use credit cards whenever possible and carry two if one is compromised or not accepted.
  4. Use reputable ATMs for cash withdrawals and keep only as much cash as needed.
  5. If your passport is stolen, contact the nearest US Embassy.
  6. Try to arrive during daylight hours to get familiar with your surroundings
  7. Arrange transportation to your hotel from the airport or station in advance.
  8. Consider carrying a portable charger, as outlets and voltage vary by country.
  9. Maintain regular contact with someone back home who knows your travel plans.

We know these tips will help make your travels abroad enjoyable and worry-free. You are Welcome. Bon voyage!.
